Kimono de Jack
Who are we?
Kimono de Jack was founded in Kyoto in 2010 by eleven kimono enthusiasts who wanted to create more opportunities for people to wear kimono in everyday life. Concerned that the decline in opportunities to wear kimono was a major contributing factor to the shrinking kimono industry, they decided to create a kimono flash mob. The goal was to "highjack" the space with as many people in kimono as possible, hence the name Kimono de Jack, which basically translates to Highjack in Kimono.
So this group posted an open invitation on Twitter for a casual gathering where participants could meet up in kimono and take over a public space for a few hours. The first event, held on May 7, 2010, in Kyoto, gained media attention and quickly grew into a global movement, spreading across Japan, Europe, and the Americas.
Kimono de Jack prides itself on being open to the public, free to attend, and welcoming of everyone. No kimono police, and no strict rules, you are free to come as you are!
